The Mahonesa class was a class of Spanish 5thÐrate frigates, armed with 34 cannons and part of the ÒArmada RealÓ. Often considered the best frigates in the Spanish Navy, they had a designed crew of around 280, and were armed with 26 12ÐPounder guns in the lower deck and 8 6ÐPounder guns in the upperdeck.

Description

The Santa Monica Ð aka Mahonesa Ð was the first of a series of 6 frigates of 34 guns, built in the Minorcan port of Mah—n, and had as her first service the transport of troops of Mallorca. This ship performed various services along the Mediterranean sea, and took part to French Revolutionary Wars until she was captured by the HMS Terpsichore on October 13, 1796 on the Cape of Gata, after a fight of three hours with 21 dead crewmen.
